Wowzers ! – preview of the Marvel John Carter: A Princess of Mars comic.

Right up front. I LIKE it. Cool designs, a unique look and the Tharks are wearing feathers. Kinda sketchy and watercolory with lot’s of motion. It doesn’t seem to be a direct adaptation, the events are a little different and the dialogue is funnier. Neato. See more at

I had no idea how fresh that would feel just looking at it . . . . really . . . that just felt fresh to look at and to read, kinda like drinking a a cold sprite!!!!

I mean wow, it is nice to see the story adapted in a different way (surprisingly)

and the art . . . . is just something new . . . sure john looks a little like the joker (I am not complaining I am sure at least one version of the joker had him as a southern gentlemen XD )

he just . .. looks . . . angry . . . .the whole world looks angry, the coloring make it look like it is on fire and has always been in such a state of madness.

and it is somewhat reminiscent of “the martian” and “league of extraordinary gentlemen”

it looks so much better and well thought out than dynamites rush job!!! It actualyl looks and reads like a remake, instead of a verbatim retelling with some minor details inexplicably changed

the changes here appear to have reason and purpose, real flow

4 stars out of 5, I am judging it now, I had to subtract a star because it isnt in my hands yet

That is without a doubt the worst artwork I’ve ever seen!!!!!!!
It looks like a 3rd grader chicken scratch.

you are offended by the fact that the art is actual art then, instead of just a depiction of the events happening in the story

      real art has style

I’m offended that anyone who looks at it could dare to call it art. My 3 year old grandson scribbles on paper and it looks like page 2 of this hacks “artwork.”

    Real art looks real.

I am going to give you a crash course in art grandfather, whilst simultaneously proving age does not equal wisdom SIR!

      NOT ART

      NOT ART

      NOT ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will notice something about things that are not art, the colors are exact, they convey only imagery an no sense of mood. The strive for perfection instead of striving for beauty. Their hands guided more by machines in the eternal quest to draw within the lines instead of trying to create the lines.

A single page of marvels princess up there, conveys more raw emotion than the entirety of dynamites warlord of mars . . .. oh and by any chance . . . are you comixfan1980 from the dynamite comics official forum?

He hijacked one of my threads about the old school marvel comic and made it into a thread for the purpose of thrashing marvels comics, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was going around spreading dissent towards marvels comic

Oh and marvel comics by the way, are not breaking any laws just in case you want to defend dynamites comics

You need help, seriously, you can’t seem to tell art from monkey scribbles. There’s a big difference between artists who can draw figures and landscapes and no talents who can’t so they scribble and have braindead people call it art.

    • I dunno Alex, it’s got energy, composition and style. It’d highly stylized but so was Disney’s Cinderella. Personally I sometimes think that my best work is my sketches.

Art is a drive for perfection, not a satisfaction with artificial perfection. The conveying of emotion through color and line work

you need help if you think all art needs to follow specific criteria then you are messed up. Art does not need to be perfect, it doesnt need to be inside the lines or strive to be exact.

By your definition of art, nothing I have ever seen in an art musuem could be considered art I think

When my grandson/”artist” scribbles you might say he has style, I say he doesn’t know how to draw. Just a difference of opinion.

and just because you have an opinion doesnt mean you are correct! When your opinion has you condemning some of the greatest artwork of all time, then you are wrong! And you have to consider changing your opinion, and learnign to appreciate a greater range of visual styling!

why do I even care what you think you’re old

you arent hurting anything by believing false information

you go ahead and think whatever you want. I will be over here enjoying the comic instead of condemning it.

  9. It is definitely a matter of taste. But to say he doesn’t know how to draw is rather like the classical musician saying the jazz musician can’t play. Perhaps he can’t but the difference isn’t about style it’s about the core skill. This guy can draw, it’s just not everyone’s taste. But he can draw, no doubt about it.

If you doubt my word on it I’ll challenge you to the ‘ draw your waitress on napkin’ challenge. The waitress chooses which one she likes the best and the looser pays the full tab. Personally I’m more drawn to jazz than classical these days. But that’s just me.

  11. I liked what you said about being fresh, good word. It almost looks like Carter is prospecting on Mars. I wonder if he doesn’t knw he’s there yet . Those look like tharks behind him.

In think you’re right about the remake vibe. It’s knd of like having 10 different people tell the same story, each time it’s told the focus and the facts are a little diffeant while still being that story.

Nice. I say we have a difference of opinion and you come back with “you’re old”, hopefully you’ll be a better judge of art, when you grow up.

    September 11, 2011 at 12:53 pm

    • Well you did fire early shot was “you can’t seem to tell art from monkey scribbles” which if you’d read my intro includes me because I too like it. That doesn’t mean you have too. But my professional stand that it is art and that he can draw has been completely ignored.

This isn’t that cesspit IMDB, I actually nuked my account over there. This is my own corner of Barsoomian joy. So it ends with “you’re old” and “you’re stupid”. I’ve never had to moderate before and I’m on my iPhone so I can’t lock the thread, but this match is over. -Jeff

One final thing, so I can end intelligently . . . try and make up for my mistep in the conversation

this is my all time favorite painting

for obvious reasons . . . it isnt a exact representation of visual. It is a representation of emotion. Your attitude would condemn it for having an inaccurate moon, and the stars being to large in the sky.

    This is my second

another great masterpiece that would be condemned by your attitude! Again, more emotion than a conveyance of actual happenings .

You are right when you say art has to be realistic, but the only thing it has to do realistically is convey emotion. If it is incapable of conveying emotion . . . . then it looses itself as art.

Because art by definition is expression of emotion or idea through a medium of any sort

You can say comics need to focus on conveying idea, but I see no reason why a comic cannot do both.

This comic will need good writing to carry it up. Not just good art, but judging it on the art alone I think it looks rather magnificent!

There . . . . that is all I have to say, and I know I shouldn’t have wrote again in this conversation. . . but it was bothering me that my final thought in the conversation was me being stupid!

And .. . . well . . . its better I not get into why it bothers me, and how much it bothers me when I say stupid things.

  14. I love the art style! I’ve been looking for this comic but I can’t find it ANYWHERE!

Where are you guys buying these comics at? I’ve been to Books A Million in South Carolina, Atlanta, GA and Oxford, AL but I can’t find it!!!!!!!!!
