Lots of Stuffs/ERB collection.

img_3117-1I was over at friends house a few days ago, touring his amazing/insane collection of toys and stuff. Lot’s and lots of toys. I think his goal is to have All The Toys. He has what I’d call ( now that I know ) The Ante Room which is amazing as it is, the Secret Room of Everything truly lives up the name I just made up for it. His collection leans heavily on Marvel Characters, Star Wars and too many other franchises to even start naming. It is truly a thing of wonder. (more…)

Playing with paint and Dejah.

There’s a real difference between my painted ‘realism’ and more my more art take on things. The realism takes a lot lot longer, and it’s like brushing a cat, just when you think you have it all, you’re nowhere near done.guide-to-mega-coverdone1

I’ve always appreciated a more painterly approach, but it’s not something I do easily. Way back I could be pretty blown away by how ‘real’ a painting looked, and in some ways have been straddling that and ‘reality’ ever since. My interest in ‘high realism’ has waned greatly in the digital age. A couple of recent projects unleashed my freak in some unexpected ways. Trying to recapture that and bottle it, making it part of my usable tool kit lead me here. Spending time on a drawing didn’t make sense when I really just wanted to colour. So, since I had a printed version of this beautiful sketch of Dejah Thoris by Iain McCaig I decided to play with that. And that’s why I’m showing it here. I feel that I did what set out to do, set up a workflow that plays to my strengths instead of against them. My thanks to Mr. McCaig for making the experiment so pleasurable and easy. Now back to the drawing board, my own, drawing board 😉   – Jeff

Thuvia of Mars: the Movie

Thuvia of Mars poster SMAs always, there’s an ongoing debate between the Reboot John Carter and the Sequels Only crowds. I’d love to see Stanton’s Gods and Warlord of Mars movies. Maybe I’d finally get a Woola toy too. I strongly suspect that
the trilogy as whole would stand as a major accomplishment and success as opposed to John Carter on its own. That the shuffling of the pieces that Stanton has shown with John Carter wouldn’t be such an issue with a complete trilogy. Anyways, that’s not happening tomorrow and neither is a reboot, that we know of.

Abraham Sherman, a long time hardcore Barsoomian who has written and excellent ‘Princess of Mars’ screenplay (on spec) has had some things to say about the reboot/sequel thing that is good reading. You should check them out at Back to Barsoom and The John Carter Files.

My toss into the fray, separate of my wanting MORE is to suggest a step to the side with a film adaptation of Thuvia, Maid of Mars. Thuvia stands at the post trilogy point (more…)

John has a new hair cut.

Other than the new ‘do’ I’m looking forward to a longer story. I’ll still be sticking to getting a trade edition of the series in the long run, but I think I’ll give this one a try.  http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/01/08/enemy-enemy-friend-robert-place-napton-talks-john-carter-special/

More Carter Comics !

Enough of my bitching about crazily priced books that I can’t have, as someone said once, ” I still live !” And I have new John Carter covers to show you. So far I’m quite impressed with all the covers. The first is my favourite and the rendering on the second is excellent. They all get points for not being porny too ! – Jeff

Martian League round 2 – updated

Guardians

Feb 9/15  The Martian Legion – Jeff let’s it go….. I have a few online conversations and and Bob Zeuschner’s review  to help me along. I no longer have a need to fork out for even the $200.00 edition. If a nice $25-$50 edition ever shows up I’ll get one for sure. Baptists on Barsoom kinda broke that it for me.

This Martian League thing still bothers me this morning. Yea it’s all wrapped around the fact that I want it and that I really can’t justify $200 on it. My wife bought me the Guardians of Galaxy art book for Christmas. It was $56 Canadian, 330 pages full color, a truly excellent movie art book. Yea I know it’s different economics, but you know what I’m thinking.
